We love GOOD DESIGN - This is Kearns Family Butchers A local family run butchers on Ballybough street in Kilkenny. This is another firm favorite of mine and another fine example of a well designed traditionally crafted shop front in Kilkenny. At Spiel we’re all about supporting local businesses in Kilkenny. Your business means a lot to the local economy and your community and in times of huge financial uncertainty we all should be trying to shop locally as much as we can. Would have liked to have got a better photo from the front to show the shopfront in its full glory, maybe someday I'll get there with no cars outside. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is the IRIS Floral Design shop on Parliament Street in Kilkenny. A shop front that has always had an attraction for me when out on a stroll. It is subtle, inviting, not overpowering. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is the Kilford Arms. A stalwart of John's Street nightlife over the years you can't but notice this imposing building as you travel up the street. A stones throw from MacDonagh Train Station, The Kilford Arms has been part of Kilkenny life as long as I can remember. Always well maintained, this building has had a number of updates and renovations over the years including O'Faolain's Bar. Three levels of stunning architecture incorporating the ruins of a 16th century church. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is the MARBLE CITY BARBERS A men's hairdressers on John's Street. Gold raised letters raised off a black shop Fascia. The barber pole in the shop window always catches my eye. Only recently I learned of its history. Did you know that long ago people went to the barber shop not just for a haircut or shave but also for bloodletting and other medical procedures. One interpretation of the colors use is red representing blood, blue meaning the veins, and white standing for bandages. Fascinating, so glad those days are gone!! We love GOOD DESIGN - This is Mocha Days A lovely little Bistro Café on Kieran Street in Kilkenny. A nice seating area inside and out with a cozy atmosphere. One of Kilkenny's many hidden gems. Not your typical style shop front fascia but attractive and eye-catching amongst the others on the street. A little imagination goes along way. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is @38co_lifestyle_boutique on Kieran Street, Kilkenny. The signage on this little boutique has always captured my interest over the last few years. When it comes to shop fronts, for me this ticks a lot of the boxes. Simple, modern, clean, unusual and eye catching, "38co" in a simple elegant serif font stood off the white wall over the door. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is McGraths Boutique on Parliament Street in Kilkenny. A name I would have heard on numerous occasions over the years associated with high quality women’s clothing. A simple white shopfront, ”McGrath” in a yellow serifed font on a white fascia with big inviting windows, always eye-catching and well dressed. An extract from the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage tells us, “A pleasant house of modest character possibly originally built as a smaller composition as suggested by the variance in the proportions of the openings in the upper floors together with some discrepancies in the treatment of the wall surface: the resulting tiered effect produced by the stepping-in of the openings presents a distinctive quality in the street scene. Although now disused the house has been well maintained retaining most of the historic fabric including a finely-executed Classically-composed shopfront displaying high quality craftsmanship, thus contributing significantly to the visual appeal of the site at street level. We love GOOD DESIGN - This is CakeFace Pastry in Irish town, Kilkenny. Another shopfront favorite of mine and a regular coffee stop for myself and Sean. Pastries and nibbles to die for and we’ll worth a visit. I love the garden at the rear where you can dine in peace, occasionally joined by a robin red breast for a chat. A simple rounded san serif font. White on a cool grey fascia. Some might say a little clinical looking for the type of shop but I really like the simplicity.
